From Bryn Donovan (who has an awesome name):

After an archaeologist digs up a treasure, the original owner shows up to take it back.

So – Victorian or Edwardian era secret society
occult/supernatural/mystery/quasi-religion
lost or stolen item
undead or alien or immortal owner (who gained power from the secret society) or maybe descendants.
An item is found in the modern era (today) by an archaeologist or maybe by an amature looking through an antique store? The item appaers to have special properties. The finder gains from the properties (but there is a downside). The original owner is notified by seeing it in the news, online/facebook, or by a magical means and investigates. Maybe another force (good or bad) also sees the discovery and investigates. Everyone wants the maguffin because it solves a modern societal problem (gives money, prestige/fame, healing). The immortal/alien/undead wants it back so he/she can return to his/her former glory or because he/she is greedy or because the item is cursed and he/she wants to destroy it.
Is the item good? bad? neutral and changes based on the owner?
What constitutes ownership? What makes it work? Does someone need to get blood or spit or water or peanut butter on the item to make it work and bond to the person holding the item?
Who’s the villain?
Who’s the hero?
What’s cool about this tale?
